Subject: Student Presentation and Parent Webinar: Safety and Respect on Social Media

Dear Families,

We are pleased to announce that students in Grades 6–12 will soon participate in a special presentation by Matthew Johnson, the Director of Education for MediaSmarts, Canada’s centre for digital and media literacy.
The presentation, titled “Respecting Yourself and Others Online,” will take place as a live virtual event on Monday, February 9, 2026 from 9:40 – 10:40 am.
Students will view the presentation either live or during the month of February with secondary students watching during their Period 2 class.

This presentation connects directly to the curriculum your child is learning in the classroom, including:

  • Personal Safety and Social-Emotional Learning skills, helping students set boundaries and manage conflict online.
  • Critical thinking and digital citizenship, helping students interpret media messages and understand their digital footprint.

To further support you and your families, we will also be hosting a dedicated parent webinar titled “The Parent Network: Social Media and Your Kids.”
This evening session is designed to help parents better understand the platforms their children are using and provides tips to help minimize negative experiences while maximizing the positive opportunities social media offers.
The parent webinar will take place on Thursday, February 5th from 7:00 – 8:15pm.
Many thanks to CPIC for sponsoring the parent webinar.
You can register for the parent webinar here.

Thank you for your continued partnership.
