This course presents hairstyling, make-up, and nail care techniques from a salon/spa perspective. Using materials, processes, and techniques used in the industry, students learn fundamental skills in hairstyling, giving manicures and facials, and providing hair/scalp analyses and treatments. Students will also consider related environmental and societal issues, and will explore secondary and postsecondary pathways leading to careers in the field of hairstyling and aesthetics.

This course enables students to develop their understanding of basic health care procedures, including the safe use of appropriate instruments, equipment, and materials. Students will focus on health care fundamentals, including the anatomical features and physiology of the major body systems and the factors that affect homeostasis in the human body. Students will develop an awareness of health and safety issues in the health care field, analyse environmental and societal issues related to health care, and learn about professional practice standards and career opportunities in the field.
COURSE NOTE: Grade 10 Applied or Academic Science is strongly recommended as pre-requisite for this course. Please see your Guidance Counsellor if you do not have the pre-req but want to take this course.

Barbering with men’s trend cutting, and coloring
This course enables students to develop knowledge and skills in Barbering, men’s trend cutting, and coloring, and offers a variety of applications that will equip students to provide services for a diverse men’s clientele. Students will project a positive attitude and a sense of personal integrity and self-confidence, and practice proper grooming and effective communications skills and visual poise.Students will learn about related health and safety laws, and understand employer-employee relationships and respect the need to deliver worthy service for value received. Students will perform the basic analytical skills to determine proper hairstyle, and color application for the client’s best overall look. Students will apply the theory, technical information and related matter to assure sound judgments, decisions, and procedures. Students will also consider environmental and societal issues related to the industry, and will acquire a more detailed knowledge of apprenticeships and direct-entry work positions.

Students will also expand their understanding of environmental and societal issues and their knowledge of postsecondary destinations in the hairstyling and aesthetics industry.
