  HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Students who enjoy learning new skills and knowledge to make healthy choices and to learn how to lead healthy lives will appreciate Health and Physical Education at St. David.  Throughout our many courses we emphasize the importance of Wellness and the important connection of Mental Health, Physical Health, Emotional Health, Relationships and Decision-Making.  Unique to high school- junior physical education classes are gender specific that allow females and males to learn separate while discovering activities that maximize involvement, interest and engagement.  Some activities students enjoy at St. David include; rock-climbing, yoga, pilates, kick-boxing, dance, self-defense, teams sports such as; football, handball, soccer, badminton, volleyball, basketball and ultimate.

As students transition from junior to senior physical education courses, there is a variety of options to suit student’s needs and interests.    Engaging courses we offer include; Fitness and Weight Training, Recreation and Sport Leadership, Exercise Science and an open Options course.  Unique to St. David is the Options course where students are exposed to a broad range of activities to build their sense of self, develop ability and to think critically.  Students choose activity options to customize the course to suit their personal interests such as; fencing, curling, water polo, climbing, kayaking, hockey, lacrosse, tennis, triathlon, outdoor education- hiking trip or canoe tripping and all sorts of individual or team activities.  Health and Physical Education courses create a culture for students to explore their personal Health and Wellness. As students graduate from our program they transfer the knowledge, skills and experiences gained throughout their years into their personal lives to become happy and healthy individuals.

Grade 9 – Phys. Ed. – Female – Healthy Active Living PPL1OF
This course equips students with the knowledge and skills they need to make healthy choices now and lead healthy, active lives in the future. Through participation in a wide range of physical activities, students develop knowledge and skills related to movement competence and personal fitness that provide a foundation for active living. Students also acquire an understanding of the factors and skills that contribute to healthy development and learn how their own well-being is affected by, and affects, the world around them. Students build their sense of self, learn to interact positively with others, and develop their ability to think critically and creatively.

Grade 9 – Phys. Ed. – Male – Healthy Active Living PPL1OM

Grade 10 – Fitness and Weight Training – Female Class PAF2OF
This course offers the self-motivated student the opportunity to analyze his/her personal level of fitness and well being through an in-depth study of, and participation in weight training and aerobic activities. At the beginning of the course, each student will evaluate their physique and fitness levels to establish goals related to nutrition and exercise. The course focus is to maximize opportunities to improve and maintain these goals.

Grade 11 – Fitness and Weight Training – Female Class PAF3OF
This course focuses on the development of a healthy lifestyle and participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that have the potential to engage students’ interest throughout their lives. Students will be encouraged to develop personal competence in a variety of movement skills, and will be given opportunities to practice goal-setting, decision-making, coping, social, and interpersonal skills. Students will also study the components of healthy relationships, reproductive health, and personal safety. Improved physical fitness through aerobic and weight training is the main objective of this course.

Grade 11 – Healthy Active Living (1 week units)  Co-ed –  PPL3OI
This course enables students to further develop the knowledge and skills they need to make healthy choices now and lead healthy, active lives in the future. Through participation in a wide range of physical activities and exposure to a broader range of activity settings, students enhance their movement competence, personal fitness, and confidence. Students also acquire an understanding of the factors and skills that contribute to healthy development and learn how their own well-being is affected by, and affects, the world around them. Students build their sense of self, learn to interact positively with others, and develop their ability to think critically and creatively.
COURSE NOTE: Optional Hiking Trip with this course (additional cost involved).

Grade 12 – Recreation and Fitness Leadership (Sport Leadership) – PLF4MI
This course enables students to explore the benefits of lifelong participation in active recreation and healthy leisure and to develop the leadership and coordinating skills needed to plan, organize, and safely implement recreational events and other activities related to healthy, active living. Students will also learn how to promote the benefits of healthy, active living to others through mentoring and assisting them in making informed decisions that enhance their well-being. The course will prepare students for university programs in physical education and health and kinesiology and for college and university programs in recreation and leisure management, fitness and health promotion, and fitness leadership.
COURSE NOTE: Recreation and Fitness Leadership- This is a Grade 12 U/C course that can count as one of your 6 courses if you are applying to university/college programs. This course is available to Grade 11 or 12 students.
CREDIT: 1 TYPE: College/University GRADE: 11-12
PREREQUISITE: Any health and physical education course.

Grade 12 – Introductory Kinesiology  University Level Course – PSK4UI
This course focuses on the study of human movement and of systems, factors, and principles involved in human development. Students will learn about the effects of physical activity on health and performance, the evolution of physical activity and sports, and the factors that influence an individual’s participation in physical activity. The course prepares students for university programs in physical education, kinesiology, recreation, and sports administration.
COURSE NOTE: This is a NEW Grade 12 University level course, it can count as part of your 6 courses if you are applying to university programs. This course takes the place of the previous PSE4UI Exercise Science course.

PREREQUISITE: Any Grade 11 university or university/college preparation course in Science, or any Physical Education course.

Grade 12 – Co-ed course-Healthy Active Living (1 week units)- PPL4OI
This course enables students to further develop the knowledge and skills they need to make healthy choices. It places special emphasis on how students can maintain the habits of healthy, active living throughout their lives as they make the transition to adulthood and independent living. Through participation in a wide range of physical activities in a variety of settings, students can enhance their movement competence, personal fitness, and confidence. Students also acquire an understanding of the factors and skills that contribute to healthy development and learn how their own well-being is affected by, and affects, the world around them. Students build their sense of self, learn to interact positively with others, and develop their ability to think critically and creatively.
